A large collaborative effort led by the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network compared the functional and anatomical properties of neurons in human neocortex to their transcriptomic profiles. Our platform LMtrace® has enabled high-throughput neuron shape analysis of these neurons and allowed the researchers to link neuronal morphology to genetic and electrophysiological properties. Among others, the study identified novel transcriptomic subtypes of SMI-32ir neurons, a population of deep layer 3 brain cells that suffers particularly strongly from early degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease. We congratulate the whole team to this spectacular research and we are honoured to be part of this success story.
