In their recent publication, 3D cellular reconstruction of cortical glia and parenchymal morphometric analysis from Serial Block-Face Electron Microscopy of juvenile rat, Dr. Corrado Calí and colleagues demonstrated the importance of quantitative image analysis. Analyzing a 750,000 μm³ rat brain volume at electron microscopic resolution makes automatization indispensable. supported this project by proofreading astrocytes and reconstructing mitochondria automatically, enabling a detailed morphometric characterization of the cellular ultrastructure. Astrocytes have highly complex morphology and play an important role in trophic and metabolic regulation of the brain. Calí et al. analyzed their branching patterns—including perivascular processes—and extracted important morphological parameters for large-scale modelling.
